I saw the light, I saw the light. No more darkness, no more night. Mumble, mumble. Mumble a little bit more. Praise the Lord, I saw the light!
These lyrics and their accompanying tune broke into my brain and out my mouth while running errands with the boys last week. I couldn’t think of the missing lyrics, nor whose song it was. So I googled. And came up with Hank Williams. I pulled it up on youtube for the boys when we got home. They weren’t particularly impressed and wandered off to their rooms as I continued to listen and wonder…..what is my history with this song? Perhaps the record stack at Grandma’s beach house where my family spent my childhood vacations? I took a brief memory trail to inhabit my 8 or 9 year old self, sitting in Grandma’s musty mobile home, flipping through old, worn records. It was there that my brother and sisters and I fell in love with the 1964 Winnie the Pooh soundtrack – setting the arm on that record player over and over and over again. I associate the Gaither Trio with that little alcove in the mobile home hall, and also Jimmy Swaggart. Yep. So, I don’t know. Maybe there was a Hank Williams gospel album in that stack? Or one of the many other artists who have covered this song. Whatever. No conclusions.
Later that day I took a walk with the dog. We meandered along our regular walking trail. As the sky darkened and the sun began to set we finally turned toward home. We were just a couple blocks from our driveway when I noticed a car slowing as it approached us. The windows were closed, but I could hear the music thumping as they got closer. The driver turned at the intersection and drove down the road, away from me, but not before I heard Hank Williams belting out his tune >>> I saw the light, I saw the light. No more darkness, no more night…….
And I couldn’t help but wonder…..what in the world?!?
Synchronicity? or super weird coincidence.
